Simple Tips for Protecting Your Feet From Everyday Problems

Posted on: 13 April 2015

You may not give much thought as to the health of your feet or be concerned with common, everyday problems that often develop on the feet. However, once these problems develop, you could be in severe pain or even need surgery to be able to walk as you should. Problems with the feet can be avoided with a few simple tips that most podiatrists wish their patients would follow.

1. Wear comfortable shoes that actually fit

This may seem like an obvious point, but keep in mind that many people buy shoes according to how they look, not according to comfort. High heels and overly stiff leather are two common culprits for shoes that look good but which may not be comfortable for wearing.

Getting shoes that actually fit is also important yet something that most people neglect, as they may not try on shoes before buying or may not realize how their feet change in size and shape over the years. It's also not uncommon for those who have wide feet or feet that are larger than average to try to push them into a particular size with little regard to how those shoes actually fit.

Shoes that are too tight can cause the toes to grow crooked and bunions to form, along with calluses and corns. In some cases, surgery may be needed to correct these.

2. Massage and soak your feet regularly

Massage and soaking can increase blood circulation which forces muscles to relax. Doing this for your feet can mean less pain and stiffness throughout the day, and it gives you a chance to examine your feet to see if they're developing certain problems such as calluses and corns. You can note if your toes seem to be crooked or if a toenail seems to be ingrown. Having a podiatrist examine these problems can ensure they're cared for before they become serious.

3. Protect your feet against damage during sports

Playing sports is a good way to damage your feet if they're not protected. Invest in quality sneakers that cushion the bottom of your feet and your toes, and wrap your ankles to protect them from impact. Quality socks can pull away sweat so that you're not prone to rashes or bacteria buildup. Learn how to land properly so that your feet don't take all the impact of jumps. All of these tips will protect you from potential fractures and other common problems that athletes suffer.
